Hip Pain

Conditions and Information

Below you will find our educational resources for patients suffering hip pain or injury.

Your first decision is to decide whether a non-surgical regenerative procedure is a good fit for you. As part of Oklahoma’s only Regenexx clinic, our physicians use non-surgical injection-based procedures for people suffering from hip pain due to common injuries. These procedures utilize concentrated repair cells that are obtained from your own bone marrow or blood to promote your body’s own natural ability to heal.

The more you are educated about your condition, the better decision you can make about potential treatment options.

Hip Osteoarthritis (OA)

Symptoms

One of the first symptoms of hip OA is often stiffness of the hip joint and a dull aching sensation. Symptoms often worsen with activity but improve with rest. Without treatment, the progressive degenerative process of osteoarthritis typically becomes worse with time. As your hip becomes inflexible and painful, you begin to have difficulty performing everyday activities such as walking, bending, or standing from a seated position. If osteoarthritis worsens to a moderately severe stage, you may experience pain when resting and sitting still.

Pain Location

Pain may be felt in the front, back, or side of the hip. Depending on your level of activity and other associated hip problems, osteoarthritis can result in either slow progression or rapid joint deterioration.  It is essential to have a thorough specialist physician evaluation and proper diagnosis if you have lingering symptoms of hip pain.

Sciatica & Sciatic Nerves

A widespread cause of hip pain

Pinched spinal nerves resulting in pain down the hip and or leg are a widespread cause of hip pain. Referred to medically as radiculopathy, radicular pain, or sciatica, it can be difficult for a patient to identify a spinal cause of hip pain without a specialist.

A Hip X-ray might not identify this condition

Spinal narrowing and degeneration in the spine can put pressure on nerves that result in hip pain, numbness, or weakness. Patients may experience the pain of a spinal condition in a distant area of the body, such as the hip or knee. Even if you feel no pain in your lumbar spine, this can still be the source of your hip pain. A simple hip X-ray will not usually diagnose this type of problem. This is another reason it is crucial to have a specialist evaluation with those experienced in treating both the spine and hip joints.

Hip Labrum Damage

As the ball of the upper leg bone, or femur, fits into the hip “socket,” there is a sturdy outer ring of tissue that helps stabilize the joint called the hip labrum. This tough ring of labral tissue can become damaged with varying degrees of tears that result in joint instability. As the joint wobbles within the socket, damage to the soft tissues and ultimately the bones themselves occurs. This process often leads directly to osteoarthritis over time, and many millions suffer daily from this degenerative process. In addition the degenerative process, hip labral injuries can cause pain immediately following an injury.

Common Symptoms
  • Reduced ranges of movement due to pain
  • Popping or clicking of the joint
  • General instability of the hip when moving
